"The History"
ALCANTARA used to be called "KOGTONG" from a big fish which was said to inhabit a spring in the heart of the town. When the Spaniards came, they renamed the place Alcantara after a town in Spain.It became a town in 1830 as it separated from neighboring towns of Ronda and Moalboal.
Alcantara is also a fifth class municipality in the province of Cebu, Philippines. It is located 85.3 kms. southeast of Cebu City. It is bounded in the North by the Municipality of Ronda; in the south by the Municipality of Moalboal; in the East by the Municipality of Argao; and in the West by Tanon Strait.

"The Church"
The smallest town of the South in terms of area, Alcantara, Cebu will celebrate its annual fiesta in honor to St. Augustine de Hippo every August 28-29.
"The Miracle"
Alcantaranhon were amazed upon seeing the head of the image of Our Lady of Rosary which originally was facing front, face to the right, in the direction of where Bohol is. A Parish Pastoral Council- Committee , Mrs. Quiroga said that they tried moving the head back to its original position but could not do so.
The image of the Our Lady of the Holy Rosary was placed in front of the altar of the church because it is the Rosary Month and residents would pray the Rosary every dawn and at 6 in the evening.
Residents immediately linked what they called a “miracle” to the earthquake that hit Cebu and Bohol last October 15, 2013 which killed over a hundred and destroyed buildings, mostly decades-old churches in Bohol. Quiroga believes the “miracle” is Mother Mary’s message to Filipinos to have faith and believe in God.
